Weekly Writing Challenge: A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, right? Prove it!
This week’s challenge couldn’t be simpler: tell a story based on this picture.
Well, I’m not sure I can write 1,000 words on this photo, but this is what I see.
The photo appears to have been taken in the late 40s or early 50s in the UK. A shot before going to church, perhaps?
A Father holds his children’s hand and although it’s meant to be a family portrait, nobody appears happy at this moment in time. There’s no trace of a smile on their faces and I’m assuming that their frowns is partly due to the glare of the sun through the clouds yet something else seems to be there. Something deeper? A sadness is captured on their faces specially with the little girl bitting her bottom lip, possibly the death of their Mum?
After the photograph was taken, there is a quick scurry into a vehicle or a brisk walk to the church. A solemn occurrence prior to this has left it’s mark on their faces.
With time, their sadness will heal…
It sounds more like a reading, doesn’t it? Sorry about that – but that’s what I get!

Good for you… At least you wrote something.
Yes it was funny how it turned out but I’ve found out today that the true story was that they were actually going to church. I guess I got that part of it
I like this. It’s well thought out and you’ve really studied the picture closely.
When I saw it, my imagination ran away with me (again).
Thanks so much for coming over to my blog
It’s funny how we each approach the photo from a different angle, isn’t it?
Your imagination goes wild, mine studies it
